Projects

Tanzania

During the week of February 22, 2010, Dr. Tariq Gill, Mr. Brian Wetzel, and Mr. Matt Coletta traveled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and specifically the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Services (www. muchs.ac.tz). With assistance from representatives from Muhimbili Hospital, they embarked on a fact finding mission to explore needs, establish relationships and develop connections to educate and provide expertise in the area of Medical Imaging.

From the visit, four goals and action plans were established:

  1. Establish connectivity for electronic communications and transmission of images between MUHAS and Lourdes Hospital allowing Radiologists to provide expert opinions in Medical Imaging Action Plan: Implementation
  2. Develop a clearer understanding of the educational affiliation with Lourdes Hospital Action Plan: Beginning in June, 2010, physicians and lead technologists will be rotating to Lourdes Hospital for 3 month clinical training in advanced modalities such as Ultrasound (including Vascular Sonography), Computer Tomography (CT scans), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
  3. Expand the development of network connectivity to allow for video conferencing and other educational resources Action Plan: Begin sourcing companies that might donate equipment and considering various funding campaigns. Textbooks are currently being collected from the Lourdes Hospital Radiology Department staff. Other hospitals from NY State have agreed to participate in the program. YouTube videos and Webinars are being created.
  4. Establish a Mammography program inclusive of procuring equipment as well as providing training support to staff Action Plan: RWB is sourcing contacts for equipment.
